Mollie O'Callaghan won the 200m freestyle at the Australian Swimming Trials in 1:52.86, booking her ticket to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
## What happened?
O'Callaghan's time was just shy of Ariarne Titmus's world record of 1:52.23, set in 2023.
She powered through the first half of the 200m final, 0.81 seconds below the record split after 100m.
O'Callaghan admitted she was still learning the race, saying she does not know why she went out so hard.
## Why it matters for Mollie O'Callaghan
This win marks O'Callaghan's first step towards her first Commonwealth title in the 200m freestyle.
She will be joined in the 200m by Lani Pallister, who finished second with a personal best time of 1:53.65.
Pallister has joined O'Callaghan at the St Peters club in Brisbane and said she was in awe of her teammate.
## What comes next?
O'Callaghan will compete in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games next month, chasing her first Commonwealth title in the 200m freestyle.
She has already broken Federica Pellegrini's 2009 supersuit era record as a 19-year-old at the world championships in 2023.
O'Callaghan bettered that time of 1:52.85 at the Olympic trials the following year, but Titmus pipped her with a 1:52.23 to set a new world's best mark.
And O'Callaghan had the last laugh in their 200m rivalry when she beat Titmus to gold at the Paris Games.
But the world record remains out of reach for now, with O'Callaghan saying she does not need Australia's former golden girl in the pool at training or meets to spur her on.
So O'Callaghan will continue to push herself, aiming to master the 200m freestyle event.
She holds the short-course 200m world record and is determined to add the long-course record to her collection.
O'Callaghan's coach, Dean Boxall, will likely play a key role in helping her achieve this goal.
As O'Callaghan said, "I live and I learn, and this is just another thing off the list.
